Hansa
Hybrid Rugosa (1905)
See a large rugosa bush full with large double blooms of deep purple/crmson along the roadside or in an abandoned farm. You're probably looking at Hansa. A very common rugosa but a very valuable one also. It can grow up to 7' and spread 8' if conditions are good. It repeats blooms very well and is hardy as nails. Very fragrant, it semi-double blooms show their golden stamens. Hansa bears a wonderful show of big red hips in the fall. So what more would you want if your looking for a large hedge rose or just a large specimen rose. You need lots of room though! Suckkers readily so don't put it in a manicured lot. Prune it down & cut out dead wood every second year to keep it form going bare at the bottom. Zone 3
