Super Excelsa

Breeders:Hetzel 1986

  • Hardy to Zone 4b
  • Flowers: Masses of hugh trusses of 2.5" crimson red flowers
  • Size: vigorous climbing rose to 12'. Needs protection to obtain this height in zone 5 and below.
  • Fragrance: Moderately fragrant.
  • "Super Excelsa" is the mate to "Super Dorothy". The ramblers look almost identical to the old beauties they're named after but one great improvement; that they re-bloom later in the season where the former ones don't. We love the way the blooms stay on the trusses for a very long time so that the first ones opened are a molted, lighter rose red that contrasts the deeper crimson blooms just opened. As most wichuraniana ramblers it blooms later than most modern day roses. When the other roses are going over the Dorothies will be just coming into their own. Give these roses plenty of room to ramble and be sure to cut some for indoors too as they have a very long vase life!
